How to Protect Your Silver Jewelry

Silver jewelry is one of the hardiest types of jewelry around. Sterling silver is great for everyday wear and can be enjoyed as fine jewelry as well as in costume form. However, there are some things that you should do to protect your silver jewelry so that you can enjoy it for years and years to come. Read on to learn how to protect silver jewelry.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need:

Cotton cloth
Non-abrasive metal cleaner

   1. Store it separately from other pieces. Although silver jewelry is pretty resilient, it will develop fine scratches in the metal over time if you store it with other jewelry. Never pile your silver jewelry together or keep it in a box where gemstones can scratch the metal surfaces.
   2. Wipe it down with a cotton cloth after you wear it. This will remove oils from your skin and acid residues from your makeup. Always use a 100 percent cotton cloth as polyester blends can scratch the jewelry.
   3. Polish only with non-abrasive cleaners. Use a silver polish and a soft sponge or cloth to clean your jewelry. If there are gemstones or other stones set in the jewelry, avoid touching them with the silver polish. Once you are done cleaning the jewelry make sure that you have rinsed off all of the cleaner before storing the pieces.
   4. Avoid scrubbing plated jewelry. There is nothing wrong with purchasing and wearing silver plated jewelry, but it is very important to clean it with great care in order to keep the plating on the base metal as long as possible. Once the plating wears away, you will either have to have the piece re-plated or stop wearing it as most base metals react negatively with skin and can turn it green. Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe the jewelry down after you wear it to prevent the oils in your skin from wearing away the plating.
   5. Apply makeup before putting on silver jewelry. Makeup and perfume can contain slightly acidic elements that will erode and tarnish silver jewelry. Make sure that you are done with your makeup and that your perfume has dried on your skin before putting on your silver pieces.

Ten Ignorances of Americans

Obama and Muslim

Recently Pew poll found that nearly one fifth of Americans (mistakenly) believe that President Obama is a Muslim. The portion of poll respondents who believe Obama is a Muslim has risen recently。

Evolution

To mark the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, Gallup thought it might be a good idea to poll Americans on their beliefs of the British naturalist's theory. But the results must have had Darwin spinning in his grave, since only 39 percent of Americans believed in the theory. The good news: only a quarter said they didn't believe it; the remaining portion either didn't have an opinion or didn't answer。

Witchcraft

It turns out that 21 percent of Americans believe there are real sorcerors, conjurers, and warlocks out there。

Death panels

On Facebook, Sarah Palin wrote in August 2009 that Obama would institute a "death panel" as part of health-care reform. Soon pundits and politicians were demagoguing the issue into common currency. Even in August 2010, one year after the initial burst and five months after health reform was signed into law, four in 10 Americans mistakenly believe it。

Saddam's WMDs

Even years after claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction or had links to the September 11 attacks had been debunked, not all Americans were convinced. In a June 2007 Newsweek poll, four years after the invasion of Iraq, 41 percent believed Saddam was involved in 9/11.

Heliocentrism

Didn't we clear this one up in the 16th century? Copernicus be damned, 20 percent of Americans were still sure in 1999 that the sun revolved around the Earth。

History of religion

If mutual understanding is the key to tolerance, we're in trouble. According to Newsweek's 2007 What You Need to Know poll, barely half of Americans were correctly able to state that Judaism was older than both Christianity and Islam。

Supreme Court vs. Seven Dwarfs

In a 2006 poll, more than three quarters of Americans could name at least two of the seven dwarfs, while not quite a quarter could name two members of the Supreme Court。

World geography

Lost? Don't ask an American. Sixty-three percent of young Americans can't find Iraq on a map, despite the ongoing U.S involvement there. Nine out of 10 can't find Afghanistan - even if you give them the advantage of a map limited to Asia。

Three Stooges vs. Three Branches

According to Zogby, the majority of Americans - three in four - can correctly identify Larry, Curly, and Moe as the Three Stooges. Only two out of five respondents, however, can correctly identify the executive, legislative, and judicial branches as the three wings of government。

Happier marriages result from attractive women and uglier men

From:  http://www.24en.com

He's had many an unkind comment about his looks when set against the radiant beauty of girlfriend Sienna Miller.

But Rhys Ifans seems likely to have the last laugh because psychologists reckon that happier marriages result from attractive women who wed uglier men.

And women who marry handsome men had better watch out. Men who saw themselves as better looking than their wives were more likely to be disgruntled and have negative feelings about their marriage, experts found.

The University of Tennessee study might also explain a few other couples such as Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas and Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.

The Tennessee team tested 82 newly-wed couples for facial attractiveness and the quality of their marriage.

婚姻

Their results, in the Journal of Family Psychology, suggested most men who married attractive women were happy to bask in the glory of their partner's beauty.

But Professor Jim McNulty reported: "Men who were more attractive than their partner demonstrated a tendency to offer less emotional and practical support to their wives."

He said "evolutionary perspectives" offered an explanation.

Strathclyde University psychologist Alastair Ross said many men enjoyed the prestige of having a beautiful wife.

"Men are rated as more likeable and friendly when they have a wife who is very attractive," he added.

Learning:A Lifelong Career

As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inex-haustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and reliable warrant of success in times of uncertainty.

xuexi
Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a neyer-ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world changing so fast, to cease learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animal instinct dormant deep in our sub-conscious will come to life.weakening our will to pursue our noble ideas, undermining our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization. Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron got a daughter

From: http://www.24en.com

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron, and his wife Samantha, pose for a photograph on the coastal path at Daymer Bay in Cornwall, August 22, 2010

British Prime Minister David Cameron's wife Samantha has given birth to a baby girl, his office said.

"Both the baby -- who was born weighing 6lbs 1oz (2.7 kg) -- and Mrs Cameron are doing very well," a statement from the prime minister's Downing Street office said.

The last British prime minister to have a baby in office was former Labor leader Tony Blair, whose wife Cherie gave birth to their fourth child, Leo, in May 2000. Leo Blair was the first child born to a serving British prime minister for 150 years.

The Camerons' baby, who has not yet been named, was born at midday Tuesday, a few weeks earlier than expected, while the couple were on holiday in Cornwall, southwest England.

Center-right Conservative leader Cameron, 43, has led a coalition government since the election in May. Samantha Cameron, 39, announced shortly after the poll she would step down as creative director of luxury goods retailer Smythson.

The couple have two other children, Nancy and Arthur, born in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Their eldest son, Ivan, died in February last year aged six. He had suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy.

Ten advices lead you a valuable College Life

1. Answer the question, "Why am I going to college?"

Many college students really don't have a clear reason for being there other than the fact that they don't know what else to do yet.  They inherit goals from family and peers which aren't truly their own. What are you there to learn?  What do you want to experience?

2. Imagine your ideal college experience.

Once you know why you're going to university, imagine your ideal outcome.  Whether you've already started university or not, stop and simply write down some attributes of your ideal experience. Describe it in as much detail as you can. Real life will of course turn out differently than you visualize.  The point of visualization is to give you more clarity for making decisions right now.

3. Take at least one extra class each semester.

The real benefit to a dense schedule isn't that you'll graduate sooner.  The real benefit is that you'll enjoy a richer experience.  This sort of thing sure looks great on a resume.

4. Set clear goals for each class.

Decide what you want out of each specific class. Sometimes you'll achieve your goals; sometimes you won't.  Even if you do your best, you may still fall short. You'll have to pick your battles.  Some are worth fighting; others are best ignored.

5. Triage ruthlessly.

You don't need to put an equal amount of effort into every class.  Inject extra effort when it's important to you, but feel free to back off a little from classes that are a low priority based on your specific goals.

6. Get an early start to each day.

Getting an early start each day helped you get a lot more done, not just in the morning but throughout the day.

7. Reclaim wasted time during your classes.

Not every class is going to require your utmost concentration. Sometimes teachers babble.  Sometimes they reiterate what you already know. If a class is really challenging, sit in the front and soak up every word.  But if a class isn't challenging you, then sit in the back, do homework for other classes, and pop your head up every once in a while to see if there's anything worth jotting down.

8. Learn material the very first time it's presented.

One of the biggest time wasters in school is having to relearn something you didn't learn properly the first time.  When students say they're studying, most of the time they're making up for a previous failure to learn the material.

9. Master advanced memory techniques.

One of the keys to learning material the first time is to train yourself in advanced memory techniques. I don't recommend memorizing by repetition because it's way too slow.

10. Have some serious fun!

Challenge yourself academically, but give yourself plenty of time for fun as well.  Don't squander your leisure time hanging around doing nothing.

Love study shows men want character over chastity in women

A scientific study on love shows that men are increasingly interested in intelligent, educated women with dependable character and emotional stability, and chastity isn't an issue.
The findings by Researchers at the University of Iowa are part of a study quoted by media reports Monday.
Conducted every decade since 1939, the study asks participants to rank a list of 18 characteristics they would want in a partner on a scale ranging from "irrelevant" to "essential."
Included are such items as "sociability" and "good cook, housekeeper," as well as "mutual attraction and love," which came in first place for both men and women in 2008. (In 1939, it wasn't in the top three for either sex.)
Male and female participants in 2008 rounded out their top traits with "dependable character" and "emotional stability, maturity." Men ranked intelligence fourth, a big jump from 11th place in 1939; in addition, "good financial prospect" moved to 12th place in 2008, a shift from its low 17th-place ranking in 1939 and last-place ranking in 1967.
"This is a generation of men who has grown up with educated women as their mothers, teachers, doctors, and role models," said Christine Whelan, head of the study and author of "Marry Smart: The Intelligent Woman's Guide to True Love" (Simon & Schuster, 2008).
"And in tough economic times, sharing the financial burden with a spouse takes the burden off these guys to be the sole provider," she said.
The study's participants were college students from the University of Iowa, the University of Washington, the University of Virginia, and Penn State University.
"Like attracts like, so certainly the fact that we were polling college students would suggest that intelligence and education are going to be important characteristics," Whelan said.
Another notable shift involves the significance of chastity: In 1939, it was valued more than intelligence in women, but in 2008, it was ranked the least important characteristic. Furthermore, it also was ranked the least important for men. This, coupled with the shared top-three ranking for both men and women, suggests a commonality that seems positively modern-day.

研究:家有兄弟 女孩晚熟

Boys may delay their sisters from becoming women and from having sex, new findings from Australia suggest.

The presence of older brothers seemed to delay the onset of menstruation of girls by nearly a year on average, and having younger brothers seemed to postpone the beginning of sexual activity in women by slightly more than a year, scientists found after interviewing 273 Australians

To learn whether they also had an effect on their sisters' reproductive success, researchers investigated 197 women and 76 men. They ranged in age from 18 to 75, and all but 10 - seven of them women - had siblings.

"This research helps us to better understand how family dynamics influence development," said researcher Fritha Milne, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Western Australia.

In attempting to explain the delayed starts of menstruation and sexual activity, the researchers ruled out factors such as socioeconomic class. Instead, they conjectured that older brothers may have delayed the physiological maturation of sisters by absorbing more parental resources or by applying psychological stresses. Meanwhile, younger brothers may have delayed girls' behavioral maturation by demanding that their older sisters assume care-taking roles.

Sacrifice your own wrong doing

Once upon a time, King Brahmadatta was ruling in Benares, in northern India. The Enlightenment Being was born as his son, the prince. Being quite intelligent, he completed his entire education by the age of 16. So, at this early age, his father made him second in command .
In those days, most people in Benares worshipped gods. They were very superstitious . They thought gods caused things to happen to them, rather than being results of their own actions. So they would pray to these gods and ask special favors. They would ask for a lucky marriage, or the birth of a child, or riches, or fame.
They would promise the gods that, if their prayers were answered, they would pay them by ** offerings to them. In addition to flowers and perfumes, they imagined the gods desired the sacrifice of animals. So, when they thought the gods had helped them, they killed many animals — goats, lambs, chickens, pigs and others.
The prince saw all this and thought, "These helpless animals are also subjects of the king, so I must protect them. The people commit these unwholesome acts due to ignorance and superstition. This cannot be true religion.
For true religion offers life as it really is, not killing. True religion offers peace of mind, not cruelty.
"I fear these people believe in their superstitions too strongly to give them up. This is very sad. But perhaps their beliefs can at least be put to good use. Some day I will become king. So I must begin to make a plan to let their superstitions help them. If they must offer sacrifices, let them kill their own greed and hatred, instead of these helpless animals! Then the whole kingdom will benefit."
So the prince devised a clever long term plan. Every so often, he rode in his grand chariot to a popular banyan tree just outside the city. This was a huge tree, where the people prayed and made offerings to a god they thought lived there. The prince came down from his chariot and made the same offerings as the others — incense , flowers, perfumes and water — but not animal sacrifices.
In this way he made a great show, and the news spread about his offerings. Pretty soon, all the people thought he was a true believer in the great god of the banyan tree.
In due time, King Brahmadatta died and his son became king. He ruled as a righteous king, and the people benefited. So all his subjects came to trust and respect him as a just and honorable king.
Then one day, he decided it was the right time to carry out the rest of his plan. So he called all the leading citizens of Benares to the royal assembly hall. He asked them, "Worthy ministers and loyal subjects, do you know how I was able to make sure that I would become king?" No one could answer.
He said, "Do you remember that I often gave wonderful sweet offerings to the great god of the banyan tree?" "Yes, our lord," they said.
The king continued, "At each of those times, I made a promise to the powerful god of the tree. I prayed, 'Oh mighty one, if you make me King of Benares, I will offer a special sacrifice to you, far greater than flowers and perfumes.'
"Since I am now the king, you all can see for yourselves that the god has answered my prayers. So now I must keep my promise and offer the special sacrifice."
All those in the assembly hall agreed. They said, "We must prepare this sacrifice at once. What animals do you wish to kill?"
The king said, "My dear subjects , I am glad you are so willing to cooperate. I promised the great god of the banyan tree that I would sacrifice anyone who fails to practice the Five Training Steps. That is, anyone who destroys life, takes what is not given, does wrong in **ual ways, speaks falsely, or loses his mind from alcohol. I promised that, if any do these things, I will offer their guts , and their flesh and blood on the great god's altar!"
Being so superstitious, all those in the hall agreed that this must be done, or the god would surely punish the king and the kingdom.
The king thought, "Ah, such is the power of superstition that these people have lost all common sense! They cannot see that, since the first training step is to give up killing, if I sacrificed one of my subjects, I would be next on the altar! And such is the power of superstition that I could make such a promise, and never have to carry it out!"
So, with full confidence in the power of superstition, the king said to the leading citizens, "Go into all the kingdom and announce the promise I made to the god. Then proclaim that the first one-thousand who break any of the training steps will have the honor of being sacrificed, to keep the king's promise."
Lo and behold , the people of Benares became famous for carefully practicing the Five Training Steps. And the good king, who knew his subjects so well, sacrificed no one.
The moral is: Sacrifice your own wrong doing, not some helpless animal.

Chinese Traditional Festival - Spring Festival

The origins of the Spring Festival in China is a history of about 4000 years. It is the most popular folk, and one of the most solemn festivals in China.

People also say "Guo Nian" as another name of the Spring Festival. It is said, in antient times, there was one of the most ferocious beast called the "Nian" in the world. It growed bigger than the camel, ran up faster than the wind, roared up louder than mine. Once it came out, it ate people when saw people, it ate animals when saw animals, so people's lives were in serious danger. God was angry with "Nian", so it was locked into the mountains, it was only allowed out of the mountains once a year. In long-term practice, people found that "Nian" had "three fears" - fear of red color, fear of noise, fear of fire.

Thus, the twelfth lunar month 30th night of a year, People pasted red paper at the door, and constantly pounding on drums and firecrackers at the same time, lighted a candle through the night at the house. "Nian" came here at night, it saw that every family was bright, it sound that firecrackers everywhere. It was very afraid, so it returned to its cave. Then it came here in the day again, and it saw red paper at every door, acoustic drums were everywhere. It was scared aoubt all of this, so it went back its cave, and never came out any more, allegedly starved to death in the deep forests. Later years, people turned againsting "Nian", driving on "Nian" to leading a happy and safe New Year. "Nian" did not exist any more, but the custom of "Guo Nian" was still maintained. Red couplets, brilliant light, crisp firecrackers, loud gongs and drums, year after year.

If you want to lead this Chinese traditional festival, you can come to China at the end of January and early February when all Chinese are celebrating Spring Festival. You must fall in love with this important Chinese festival.
